BWI History

Innovative Control Solutions Rooted In Safety And Reliability

Founded in 1988 in Butler, Pennsylvania, BWI Eagle began with a singular goal: to improve safety and productivity in coal mining through cutting-edge conveyor-belt monitoring technology. The company’s first innovation, a non-contacting conveyor speed switch, set the tone for a legacy of practical, rugged and forward-thinking control solutions. Named for its ability to “watch like an eagle,” the Eagle speed switch quickly became a trusted name in mining operations.

To accelerate growth, BWI Eagle partnered with transformer manufacturer Butler Winding, Inc., forming a joint venture that gave rise to the BWI Eagle name. This collaboration provided the capital and technical resources necessary to expand product development and market reach.

A major milestone came in 1994 with the introduction of spread-spectrum wireless remote control systems. These robust, flexible solutions opened the door to new industrial markets beyond mining, fueling steady growth and a reputation for problem-solving across diverse industries.

In 2023, BWI Eagle joined the Cattron family, a global leader in industrial control solutions. This strategic acquisition combined two complementary product portfolios, strengthening BWI Eagle’s reach and impact across global markets while continuing its commitment to quality, customization, and performance.

Broad Application, Tailored Solutions

Today, BWI Eagle wireless remote controls power a wide array of industrial applications from common uses to one-of-a-kind challenges. Any device that can be turned on, off or moved can be controlled with a BWI Eagle system. Our technology has been trusted in applications ranging from operating crushers and valves to controlling church bells, fountains, industrial fans, and even helicopter-mounted tree trimmers.

Examples of unique BWI Eagle applications include:

  • Activating a net to safely capture eagles from an airport runway
  • Triggering special effects signage in a stadium during home runs
  • Controlling saws used in aerial vegetation management
  • Enabling trainers to send signals to marine animals underwater
  • Operating alarms to deter birds in urban environments
  • Running long-distance target systems at shooting ranges

Product Overview

Industrial Wireless Remote Controls
BWI Eagle remote control systems offer unmatched range—up to 10 miles—and are ideal for controlling machinery and equipment using handheld or stationary transmitters. Multi-channel receivers support complex functions, and customizable relay logic ensures precise performance. Systems operate on license-free frequencies with interference-reducing network options.

Wireless Emergency and Machine Stops
Designed for rapid response, wireless e-stop systems provide mobile control when immediate action is critical. Lightweight and adaptable, they can be worn, mounted or carried to extend safety coverage wherever operators work.

Speed Switches and Sensors
Our digital speed switches and proximity sensors monitor motion in rotating machinery, helping protect critical equipment like conveyor belts. These non-contact systems are easy to install and deliver reliable performance in harsh environments.

Specialty Controls
When conventional systems won’t do, BWI Eagle creates custom solutions for specific challenges such as wireless dozer stops, dust suppression, slip switch testers and stitt testers. These specialty controls demonstrate our ability to innovate for niche and high-stakes applications.
